A Lack of Long-term Thinking
Sep. 21st, 2020 08:29 pmAmerican politics, nay America in general, is not noted for valuing long-term thinking. Yet, with the apparent intention of the Republican party to appoint a Supreme Court judge to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsberg, one see's a stunning example of the lack of long-term thinking.
Frankly, Mitch McConnell's announcement of an intention to vote on a nominee literally before RBG's body was cold was stunning. It was breathtakingly partisan, and because of that stupid. Assuming the Republicans succeed, and possibly even if they merely get it to a vote, there will be no reason whatsoever for the Democrats to not expand the Court to whatever number provides them a majority.
If the Republicans merely wait, they could still preserve a 5 to 4 majority in the Court for years to come. There will be a Democratic administration, if not in this November in a future year. Moving forward now merely ensures that the blowback from that administration will be harder.
