My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Full disclosure - I'm a friend of the author and backed the Kickstarter that generated this work. Having said that, I've never actually read anything Deanna Sjolander's ever written, so I had no idea if I'd like this book or not.
I do. I like it a lot. It's set in a fictional Earth that feels very 1950-ish without being specifically of that time. Although, our heroine, Sophie Stearns, is training to go to Mars on the first mission when the book opens. At any event, unforeseen events happen which ground her. Since it's on the back cover, it's not a spoiler to reveal that Sophie discovers that there are multiple dimensions and that people are traveling between them. Among those travelers are (inadvertently) Sophie.
The book is narrated by Sophie. I found her an interesting and compelling character. I also found the general worldbuilding fascinating - I'd like to see more of it. In short, I really enjoyed this book.
