Movie Deep Dive
Nov. 22nd, 2021 08:16 amThe advantage of streaming services is that one can stream movies. However, after one has streamed the new hits, one finds oneself having to go deeper into the catalog. That's how I ended up watching Hannie Caulder on Hulu.
Made in 1971, the film is a British Western (who knew the Brits made Westerns?) starring Raquel Welch. More interesting to me, three noted character actors, namely Ernest Borgnine, Jack Elam and Strother Martins played the villains - an incompetent but ruthless trio of brothers. Said brothers kill Raquel's husband, rape her, burn her house and leave her for dead while running from the Mexican Federales after a bloody bank robbery.
Raquel, who spends a good chunk of the movie clad in nothing but a red poncho, meets up with a bounty hunter who takes her to Christopher Lee's house where he makes her a custom gun. She then goes off to hunt down the brothers. More shootings ensue.
The movie is clearly trying to be a Sergio Leone-style Western and it very nearly succeeds. When I read the Wikipedia article linked above, I found out that Quentin Tarantino said the film was one of his inspirations for Kill Bill. There's a lot of similarity in the two films, although Quentin enjoyed a much larger budget. In any event, it was an interesting way to pass an evening.
