Thoughts on Capricon 42
Feb. 7th, 2022 09:30 amI attended Capricon 42 over the weekend in lovely downtown Chicago. I had *a lot* of panels, so I was busy, but it was fun. Other thoughts:
1) Per Facebook reports from one of the conrunners, total membership was just over 600, with approximately 150 of those virtual-only. Due to a variety of issues including a snowstorm east of Chicago, about 100 of the in-person people were no shows. This is about 50% of the size of a typical event.
2) Hybrid cons (virtual and in-person) are here to stay. Capricon did their hybrids well, with all of the panelists on the same platform (in-person broadcasting out or virtual broadcasting in). This kept the technical issues to a minimum.
3) The hotel was nice, but understaffed due to COVID. We're going back to them next year, so hopefully we'll see what a fully-operational hotel looks like.
