The Great Gatsby
Mar. 21st, 2024 09:10 amI had occasion to buy a second-hand copy of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel of the Jazz Age in New York. Wikipedia tells me that it was a commercial disappointment during Fitzgerald's life.
Having read it, I can understand why. It became an Important Work because, during WWII, large numbers of free copies were distributed by the Council on Books in Wartime. This "forgotten work becomes important later" happens occasionally - see Moby-Dick as another example.
