Some Desperate GlorySome Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I've been intrigued by this book for some time. When it was nominated for a Hugo, I decided to take the plunge and buy it. I'm very glad I did and since this book just moved to #1 with a bullet on my Hugo ballot I suspect the author and editor will be pleased as well.

The book's back cover blurb says that Kyr was "Raised in the bowels of Gaea station alongside the last scraps of humanity." This led me to believe that this was going to be a straightforward military SF / Space Opera. Now, to be fair, the Fate Of The Galaxy proves to be on the line, so it's Space Opera. The book is not straightforward.

Much if not all of what Kyr has been told over her seventeen years of life is a lie, designed to shape her for nefarious ends. Discovering the truth about her world and herself while dealing with The Fate Of The Galaxy is what drives this book. It's rare that a work of science fiction has a suggested reading list at the end of it. This one does, listing books about the birth of fascism and the peculiar state of North Korea.

Some Desperate Glory is a book full of ideas while being a quick and gripping read.
