I've been a little behind in posting new reviews of The Mars Run. In part, this is because I just found out about one via a Google search today.

The SF Reader web site posted a 3-star review of The Mars Run on November 8th. The reviewer, Eric Turner, said in part, "Gerrib does a wonderful job of clearly defining the parameters of his futuristic universe, making it a believable and a gritty reflection of our own world." He does admit concern that I named my character Janet Pilgrim (bonus points to the first commenter who figures out why) but overall he thought it was a worthwhile read. here's the link for the whole thing.

A new web site, Pub-ioneer, focusing on POD / self-published stuff, also liked the book. Talking about the lead character, the reviewer says, "She has to do the best she can with what she has, like real people do." Click here for the whole thing.

Well, enough with the commercials - back to the show.

It took a Google search to tell me why the name "Janet Pilgrim" was significant, and this may not be the allusion, but wotthehell: She's one of only two 3fer Playboy Playmates, a bleached blonde who is now 72 years old and appeared in Playboy in many guises in the midlate 1950s.

About as unlike your Janet Pilgrim as I could imagine without working at it.

No cause for concern. I'm an old guy who actually used to read Playboy (albeit not in 1955) and I had not heard of her. I doubt she reads hard SF. So...do I get those bonus points, or is there yet another Janet Pilgrim kicking around somewhere?

You win the cigar, sir. (Actually, that was the lady's stage name).

The page at SF Reader is throwing an error - connection problems with their SQL server.

I missed the meaning of the name ... and I know who Janet Pilgrim (the Playmate) is.

Why would that be cause for concern?

The reviewer thought it was going to be extra-cheesy. It's not - in fact it's a bit on the dark side.
