I went home over the Thanksgiving weekend, where much food was eaten. Dad and I shot skeet on Friday, and on Saturday went to a gun show. I really didn't need to buy anything, but I talked myself into picking up a Ruger LCR. Thanks to the weirdness of Illinois gun law, I won't have it for a few days, but it's mine.

Simply put, I realized that in the unlikely event I need to carry a gun, it will be an improvised situation and I won't be able to "dress around my gun," so small is better.

I dunno, I always liked the Black Panther solution:  Someone looked very carefully into what was and wasn't legal under Federal and California State law, and discovered that you can legally carry a shotgun openly if it's not loaded; that it's not illegal to wear a bandoleer of shotgun shells; that so long as you stay x feet away, a cop cannot claim you are hindering him in any way, nor may he act to prevent you from observing his actions.

They put all this together, and (since none of them were employed, of course, so they could spend all day at this) one or another street-legal car would sedately and legally follow a cop around the city, and each and every time he pulled someone over this large, intimidating black guy would get out behind him, carrying a shotgun and wearing its ammo, and from exactly the minimum distance away would “observe” everything the cop did.  He'd never say a word, no matter what the cop said to him.  He'd just watch.  Holding a shotgun in his hands, its ammo visibly ready to hand.  And there wasn't a damn thing the cops could legally do about it.

Except outlast them, which of course they did.  But while it lasted, it was damned impressive - and produced remarkably polite and forbearing behavior from the targeted cops!

So you know, there's something to be said for theatricality in these matters.

[In ten years or so, you might see autonomous drones (with serious battery packs!) doing the same thing, unless the ongoing efforts by those who know what's best for us to outlaw our use of them for the Greater Good succeed.  As I understand it you already must register them in many locales - because they say so, that's why.]
