Earth Hour

So, I hear that the World Wildlife Fund is sponsoring Earth Hour, which is a global campaign to get everybody to turn the lights out for one hour this Saturday. The stated goal is to "raise awareness" of global warming.

Hello, McFly!! Is there anybody in the Free World who is not "aware" of global warming? What rock could you be living under to have not heard of the issue?

"Awareness" or "understanding" is not the problem. People are "aware" of global warming. People "understand" that scientists believe that global warming is caused by man. But understanding something doesn't mean you agree with something. I can understand that a five-year-old wants a cookie before dinner. Doesn't mean that I agree that he needs one or that I will give him one.

Sorry, I'm not into useless feel-good exercises. I'll be the guy with the lights (CFL bulbs, ThankYouVeryMuch) on this Saturday.

I disagree with the intent too, but everyone worldwide shutting off their lights does save a lot of energy. Especially if we did it every Saturday, and for more than an hour.

It saves some energy, but the event is being billed as "awareness," and it's a once-a-year thing.

All fine and dandy. But did you know those light bulbs have trace amounts of mercury and you can't throw them away with the regular trash or recycling. I'm telling you, you just can't win.

Yes I did. "Trace" is the operant word there.
