So, I read from John Scalzi that Joe The Plumber is advising the GOP on political strategy.

Now, don't get me wrong - Joe has as much right as anybody else to offer his opinions. My question is, "what makes his opinions of any value?" Joe has no expertise in political campaigns, polling or winning elections. Nor is he a hero, and he's not even a veteran. His sole claim to fame seems to be celebrity.

Imagine, for a moment, the scorn that would be heaped on Democrats if Paris Hilton was invited to provide political advice to the Democratic Party. Justified scorn, mind you, since her sole claim to be at the table is that she's famous for being famous. (Actually, you don't have to use much imagination - remember McCain's Obama = Paris Hilton ad?)

Well, guess what - Joe is a poorer and not-as-good-looking Paris Hilton. He's famous for being famous, and the Republican Party is apparently taking his advice seriously. What exactly does that say about the Republican Party?

"What exactly does that say about the Republican Party?"

Remember, this is the party that selected Sarah Palin as the best person to be vice president -- one step away from a 70+ year old cancer survivor. It appears that the same brain trust is still at work.

They could have chosen a little more wisely (famous people should not be asked for advice, especially those famous merely for being famous) but Joe has something most political advisors don't have: He's not a member of the Intellectual Elite, and if this means that the Republicans are listening to ordinary citizens instead of their addlebrained Neocon fringe, they may not be as dumb as they sound. As I've been thinking over the past year or so, the Republicans are dead as a force in American politics--but on the flipside, you have to die to be reborn.
