So, in one of the online debates about "socialized medicine" I asked "if it's so bad, why aren't political parties in other countries trying to abolish it?"

Yglesias provides a partial answer. In Great Britain, not only is "socialized medicine" approved of, but the Conservative Party considers it something which is truly great about Britain.

The cynics among us would point out that in a country where socialized medicine exists, it is political suicide to talk about scaling it back or removing it. The Conservative Party in this country would say approximately the same as their British counterpart about public health care.

"Political suicide" suggests that the majority of voters like it.

It's amazing there's even any debate about it. As if 50,000,000 without coverage isn't a national tragedy, one which private insurance companies refuse to address.
