The Libri Foundation
Jan. 14th, 2007 06:50 pmWell, my delurk experiment didn't pull in much traffic. (Although lurkers are welcome to post!) However, I am sending $100 to the Libri Foundation. I'll let you in on a little secret. I send them $100 every year.
The Foundation is basically one person, Barbara J. McKillip. She distributes grants on a 2 - for 1 basis (in other words, every dollar raised is matched by two dollars) for rural libraries in the US. The libraries use this money to buy books, not pay operating costs.
I am on the mailing list for several other charities. As a result, I am continually getting calendars, stickers and other junk, as well as monthly letters with sob stories. I think one charity has gone through three boilers in as many years. The Libri Foundation doesn't play these games. They send an annual report and acknowledgment of gifts, and that's it. Not only that, over 90% of what they collect goes back out the door for grants to buy books.
The Libri Foundation is the real deal. I encourage people to give them a few bucks.
