Odd Lots

Since I'm going to be referencing [livejournal.com profile] jeff_duntemann in this post, I guess it's OK to "borrow" the title.

Jeff Duntemann just drove in from Colorado Springs to Chicago. He's not a fan of long-distance driving, and has been making the trip by plane, even with a lot of stuff, for years. Now, I haven't driven across Iowa or Nebraska, but driving long distance doesn't bother me. I'm able to think, listen to the radio or otherwise amuse myself. I'm not a picky eater, and the idea of being in control of things is calming. Add to that the fact that I just don't fit very well in an airline seat, and you see why I prefer driving to flying.

I'm a fan of Lone Star Steakhouses. Granted, they're not haute cuisine, but they serve a good steak at a fair price. However, the location nearest me just closed. I'm surprised at both the business decision (it seemed busy enough) and at the lack of notice. I mean, I was in the place two weeks ago, and I drove by last night to find it closed. You'd think they'd tell somebody.

A while back, I reviewed Bill Coons' self-published book SHOOT Only at the Red Airplane. (The book is about the early use of remote-control airplanes as target drones in WWII.) Well, I finally met Bill, and we traded books. He's a frail man, with a respiratory decease such that he's on constant oxygen and gets out of breath walking to the guest bedroom of his small suburban house. We had an interesting conversation.

Bill got out of the Navy in 1948 or so, and quickly got a job for a model airplane magazine, doing reviews and pictures. He also did a lot cover designs, still does drawings, and somehow got a job with the FAA as a safety instructor. He's turning 80 on Wednesday, and is looking for another hobby to keep himself busy. Bill told me that his body was slowing down (considerably, in my observation) but that his mind was still active. It was an interesting visit and I wish Bill well.
