I'm Back

in Chicago, that is. As I mentioned in my last posting, I was out of town all week. Tuesday thru mid-day Thursday was spent attending the annual convention for Metavante Corporation, our banking software vendor. I had a nice time, and learned some new stuff that I won't bore you with.

I will mention the convention site, Milwaukee's Midwest Airlines Center. Since this convention draws 3,000 or so people, that venue is the only game in town. Metavante, like many conventions, plans evening food and entertainment for both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The past two years, the amount and quality of food on both nights has been somewhat lacking. It's not Metavante's fault - they have to use the designated caterer for the Center. But since we're enterprising, problem-solving bankers, we found sustenance, including Tuesday night's visit to Karl Ratzsch's, an outstanding German restaurant. My boss thought the duck-and-goose combo plate was to die for.

Thursday afternoon I drove down to Lake Geneva, WI to attend the Rotary District 6450 Conference at the Grand Geneva resort. The resort opened in 1968 as a Playboy Club property. It has that mid-sixties architecture, of dark and angular wood against white stone, all in low-ceilinged spaces. I picked up a copy of the in-house propaganda rag, featuring a photo of a Bunny (probably somebody's grandmother by now) operating an outdoor bar.

According to said publication, the current owners bought and remodeled it in 1993, replacing the indoor pool with a very comfortable lobby bar area. We had a golf outing Saturday on the easier of the two courses, the Highlands. As far as I'm concerned, the Highlands course was designed by a committee of mountain goats, with raised greens, narrow fairways and poorly-placed (translation: right where I hit my ball) sandtraps. But it was a fun time, and quite worth the trip.

My last bit of news is from the mileage front. This trip put 253 miles on the Saturn Vue, the majority highway. On my one tank of gas for the trip I had overall mileage of 28.4 miles per gallon. Since gas is $3.49 / gallon, that's good news.
