Back in Small Town USA
Aug. 31st, 2007 03:14 pmI'm back in Westville, IL, the small town I grew up in. Drove down in the Saturn Vue hybrid (33 MPG with the air on, thank you very much). I went to visit my great uncle in the nursing home. He's got bone cancer, and not doing at all well. He's not in pain, which is good, but he can't walk and is generally failing.
I haven't lived in Westville in a quarter-century, and most of the people I hung out with when I lived here have moved out. However, my parents and my sister still live here, and I look just like my dad, except with more hair. So, people know me, but I don't know them. Example - the local volunteer fire department was passing the boot for Muscular Dystrophy in the town square. I waved one of them over to donate, and he said, "I'll have to tell Jen," (my sister) "that I got a five dollar tip today."
I see via various blogs that the Science Fiction Writers of America put out an anti-piracy notice. All the usual suspects are saying the usual things. Since I don't have a dog in this hunt, I'll sit it out.
