News from Westville
Nov. 23rd, 2007 05:41 pmAfter yesterday's post, Dad, who's retired, and I went out and ran some errands. We took "recess" during said errand run, a regular event for Dad. We stopped off at the American Legion, walked up to a bar, and had a drink. Ya gotta love a place where a $5 bill gets two mixed drinks and a respectable tip for the barmaid.
I'm just back from the State football championships. Westville was playing for the second year running, and alas lost again. Don't get me wrong - they are the most successful team in town history, and I'm very proud of them. They are, after all, 26-2 for the last two years, with both losses in Memorial Field. However, I've noticed a few things about 2A football (our state's second-smallest division) that are the difference between making the championship and winning it.
1) Winning teams have a consistent kicking game. Not necessarily good, just consistent. They can reliably execute punts, extra points and the occasional short field goal.
2) Winning teams have a functional pass game. Ours is OK at best, but strong teams have several pass plays, both short and long yardage.
Hopefully, we're building a state-championship winning program, and those factors will be addressed. But I'm still proud of the old alma mater.
