OMG A Gun!
Feb. 14th, 2008 08:40 amCNN has decided that the most "breaking news" story in space is that the Space Station Crew Can Access Gun.
First off, it's not particularly new news. The gun is part of the Soyuz space capsule survival kit, and it's been on every flight since the 1960s. Apparently, one of the early Soyuz landed way off course, and the crew had to spend a night on the steppes, listening to bears and wolves. Thus a gun (I think it's a short-barreled shotgun) was added.
Second, the entire article is an example of "guns make people nuts" thinking. In other words, otherwise reasonable people will, if a gun is available, "snap" and start blazing away. I've owned guns my whole adult life, and was raised in a gun-owning family. I've never known anybody who robbed a liquor store or shot up the high school. In short, guns do not make people nuts.
