The Night Watch
Dec. 29th, 2008 03:18 pmAlthough I am going to start work Real Soon Now on Those Who Hide, Survive, I do want to document a basic plot for The Night Watch, sequel to Space Rescue. So, the plot is this.
Set one or two years after the events of Space Rescue, the Space Rescue Service is getting pretty good at tamping down piracy, at least for ships that sign up to cooperate with them. Then a ship on the program gets attacked, in such a way that it looks like the Service's internal security is compromised.
Enter Janet Pilgrim. She holds the rank of Chief Astronaut, but is really head spy in the Special Services Group, colloquially known as the "Night Watch." She gets set loose to find out what's up, and discovers that the ship attacked wasn't looted - rather selected cargo was lifted.
Industrial mining lasers and precision servo-controls, to be precise. Just the kind of stuff you'd need to make a warship. Two races are on - one to find and stop the building of a ship that would really screw up the balance of power on Mars and another to build a counterweight.
For careful readers, I decided to drop the "Mad Mullah on Titan" plot for Night Watch, in part because it just wasn't gelling for me. At any rate, that's what's upcoming in the pipeline.
