Reading - Mini-reviews
Apr. 28th, 2009 10:04 amHere are a few capsule reviews of recently-read books.
I bought American Jennie: The Remarkable Life of Lady Randolph Churchill
based on the online hype. Well, Lady Jennie may have led a remarkable life, but you wouldn't know it from this unremarkable book. I donated this, half-read, to the Carnival Inspiration's ship library. (They actually have a very nice wood-paneled library room, although a little light on books to check out.)
A much better read proved to be The 19th Wife
. This novel was part the story of one of Brigham Young's wives and a modern polygamous family. It was well worth the read.
I also finished the last last two volumes of Ian Douglas' Heritage trilogy of military SF, Luna Marine
and Europa Strike
. They are well-written military SF books, although a bit dated as they rely on the Face Of Mars as a starting point. I'd give them 3 out of 5, which is a "read once and recycle" in my catalog. So Luna Marine is also residing in Inspiration's library.
