There's Gotta Be a Term For This...
Mar. 29th, 2010 02:05 pmThere are two things I find irritating about the current political debate. The first is the amazing ability of certain folks to ignore facts. For example, in this article, we have somebody struggling to come up for the money to pay for their cancer treatments arguing against health care reform. The key quote: Though she still faces medical bills, Amy [Townsend] said she was against the health care act, fearing so-called death panels and government inefficiency. The Townsend family might be eligible for Medicaid, suggested Collins of the Commonwealth Fund. Townsend wasn't interested.
The second thing is that the Tea Partiers and fellow travelers preach "self-sufficiency" while existing on the Government dole. Per this article, a large number of these activists are unemployed or retired folks, drawing Government checks as they run around protesting big government. Here's a representative quote from a guy drawing a Social Security check: “If you quit giving people that stuff, they would figure out how to do it on their own."
It's hard to have a rational debate with an irrational person. It's hard to take somebody seriously while their actions flout their self-proclaimed principles. There's got to be a term for this...
