The Calm After The Storm...
Jun. 24th, 2010 09:32 amSorry I didn't post yesterday. I was attacked by vampiric time-suckers in meetings all day at work. Then, when I went home, Chicago got hit by a massive thunderstorm. The weather went from at 5:00 cloudy and a light rain to by 5:30 hurricane-force winds and rain. By 6:00, the storm had completely blown through.
At my house, damage was limited to loss of cable TV and Internet, so I got my news from WBBM 780 Newsradio. Cell phone service was spotty as well, but my POTS (Plain Old Telephone Line) - you know - wires going into the wall - worked like a champ. Now you know why I keep a POTS line.
I had to run into work to make sure the generator was running, and when I left to do so, I discovered my side streets were well and thoroughly flooded. So, I'm rolling slowly along the streets, trying to keep to the highest part, and some yahoo whips around another car in front of me and roars down the flooded street at me! Fortunately disaster was averted, but how stupid can you be and still live?
Things at work were more-or-less okay (minor, mostly cosmetic, damage and a few people a bit scared) so I went home and read a book. Today is cleanup and get back to normal day.
