Free TARP, TEA Party and Link Salad
Oct. 1st, 2010 10:31 amFirst, two TEA Party items:
1) You all remember the dreaded $700 billion TARP program, passed by George Bush to prevent a bank collapse? The one that the Tea Partiers are screaming about as "waste" and "too much spending?" Well, it turns out that we're on track to get ALL the money back, and maybe even make a buck on the deal.
2) One of the many things that frustrate me about the TEA Party is how they seem to love Alaskan politicians. Except, Alaska gets $5.76 back for every $1 of taxes they pay to the Federal government. They got, per capita, twice as much stimulus money as any other state. In short, if we actually cut Federal spending, Alaska would shrivel up and die. Does anybody else see a problem with this?
Moving on to more general link salad items:
1) Here's a very funny and sadly accurate parody of a news website article about science.
2) This article states that primacy is its own justification for US foreign policy. The money quote: Because we are everywhere, threats anywhere engage our interests requiring us… to be everywhere. Foreign interventions — whether military, political, diplomatic, or economic — require no further justification in terms of national interest. They are assumed to be justified by virtue of our global presence. It is the ultimate self-licking ice cream cone.
