The Homeless
Jan. 11th, 2011 09:21 amMy sister is the Homeless Veteran Program Coordinator at the Danville, IL VA center. As one would expect from her title, her job is to find homeless veterans and get them homes. This involves a number of sub-tasks, such as mental illness treatment, substance abuse treatment and job counseling.
She wrote an interesting article (PDF at link) about what she's doing and how the program works. Her job came about in part because President Obama made a commitment to end homeless veterans in five years. Obviously this will require a lot of work, and since the factors that cause homelessness (economic, mental and substance) won't go away, an ongoing effort will be needed.
When somebody says "support the troops," this is part of what that should mean.
