1) The headline of this amazing obituary says it all: Amazing life: Fleeing Bolsheviks, fortunes won and lost, Tommy guns in Thailand and Shanghai romance. If you tried to write a novel about this woman, nobody would believe it.

2) You've seen all the hoopla recently about mass animal die-offs. Well, they happen all the time, we don't usually hear about them.

3) I give you the Google Lunar X Prize, a prize for the first private entity to land a rover on the Moon.

4) From Bad Astronomy, the first definitely solid exoplanet found. Don't get excited - it's 500 light years away and so hot that the surface is mostly molten.

5) No fan of Sarah Palin am I, so I didn't watch her reality TV show. This guy did. The money quote? this darling of Second Amendment supporters nervously asks her dad whether the small-caliber rifle kicks. Then, even more astoundingly, her father repeatedly works the bolt and loads for her as she misses shot after shot before scoring a kill on the seventh round — enough bullets for a decent hunter to take down at least five animals.

6) This post says that Fred Phelps, of Westboro Baptist Church fame, is a fraud, trolling for lawsuits.

7) To end on a positive note, here's Indians trying to get desperately needed electricity to rural India. They're using locally grown and otherwise useless rice husks for fuel. Bonus - by burning the husks, they reduce greenhouse emissions of methane.
