I survived Capricon, and had a good time. John Scalzi was his usual entertaining self, and I got to meet John Picacio, the Artist GOH and a generally all-around good guy. A few thoughts on the con:
1) The hotel only has one restaurant, a rather high-end steak place. Since one of the walking-distance restaurants, a Claim Jumpers, closed, dinner options are even more problematic. I drove to one place on Saturday, and promptly spent 15 minutes on my return looking for a parking spot. (I'm sure Valentine's Day weekend didn't help matters.)
2) Having said that, the con-runners made lemonade from a lemon by setting up the con suite in the unused restaurant space at the hotel. Besides being logistically easier for the con workers (access to deep sinks, etc.) it freed up some space in the convention center for programming.
3) Capricon runs 75 minute panels with a 15 minute passing period. This gives one a little more time to talk, and considering many people are on Fannish Central Time AKA Reverse Lombardi Time (15 minutes late) it works out well.
4) Wheeling was far enough away from the base that I booked a room. Again, that really works out better - if you, say, want to take a nap on Saturday you can!
Tomorrow, I'll have a thought on vampires vs. zombies that came to me in the shower prior to my zombie panel.
