John Carter of Mars
Mar. 18th, 2012 03:19 pmYes, I am obsessed with Mars, and so indulged my obsession with a screening of Disney's movie John Carter. It was an excellent picture, and I highly recommend it. Judging by the sparse crowd and limited show times, if you want to see it on the big screen move quickly.
The movie is simple enough - the wealthy John Carter "dies" and his nephew, Edgar Rice Burroughs, is summoned to be heir of the estate. He reads Carter's journal, recounting the epic adventures on Mars, which form the bulk of the movie. The lovely Lynn Collins plays Dejah Thoris, who in the movie is shown as intelligent and quite capable. She's also overdressed (in Burrough's books, Martians go nude) but Disney was trying to hold to a rating.
I've not read the book, so I have no idea how closely they stuck to the book's plot, although it seems to be everything I've heard of about the book. At any rate, it's well worth the price of admission.
