So, we went looking for houses yesterday. (My realtor really doesn't want me on her couch!) We looked at three townhouses and three detached homes.

What became immediately apparent is that any detached house in my price range in the area I want to be would be a massive fixer-upper if not a candidate for a tear-down. (For those not in Chicago, a "tear-down" is "tear the old house down and build a new one on the lot.") Now, if I wanted to hike out to Plainfield, I could get a new house for my money.

I don't want to live in Plainfield. Nothing wrong with Plainfield, except it's farther from work and social life then I want to be. So, it looks like I'll be in a townhouse. This is not really a problem, and there are a number of suitable options in the area. We looked at three, and one I saw earlier is still on the market. So, in order from best to worst, I am:

Willowbrook - we saw this earlier. Still has the nicest floor plan and it's move-in ready. Also the most $$$.

Darien - same complex I looked at earlier, but a significantly larger unit. Nice, not quite as spendy.

Oak Brook - very close to work, but dated interior and older wood windows mean I'd have to spend fixer-upper money. Also has a significantly higher assessment than the other two units.
