Hugo Thoughts, Movies
Jan. 31st, 2014 09:27 amSome years I find that I haven't watched enough SF movies or other long-form works to make an intelligent vote. This year is not one of them. SF movies that I've seen and which are Hugo-eligible are (listed for my convenience in voting):
1) Oblivion
2) Star Trek Into Darkness
3) Despicable Me 2
4) Pacific Rim
5) Enders Game
6) Hunger Games Catching Fire
7) This is the End
8) Gravity
Comments
Star Trek is too stupid to live, let alone get a Hugo. This is the End was entertaining, but lacked a certain gravitas. Oblivion is a great SF movie with multiple twist endings, and well worth a nod. Gravity is up for a best picture Oscar (well-deserved) and I think worth Hugo consideration as well.
That leaves four movies and three slots on my ballot. Despicable Me Too, although funny, also fails the gravitas test for me. So I think I'm filling out my ballot (in order) Ender's Game, Pacific Rim and Hunger Games.
