My new novel One of Our Spaceships is Missing releases Tuesday, and I have several promotional blog postings lined up, so this shall be the last non used-car-salesman-at-month's-end post for a while. Herewith are my thoughts on two popular movie entertainments, both of which got decidedly mixed reviews. I list them in the order I saw them.
Where The Crawdads Sing
I saw this at my local independent brew-and-chew movie house on Friday night. I've not read the book (although 15 million+ people have) but I'm told it's a faithful adaptation of same. In any event, the movie opens with the discovery of a body, and becomes a courtroom drama plus a first-person memoir of how a young girl ends up raising herself in a North Carolina marsh. It's definitely not a summer blockbuster, and at my showing the audience skewed heavily towards women of a certain age, but I found it quite enjoyable.
Persuasion
On Saturday evening I watched the new Netflix movie Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson. It's definitely takes liberties with history, and Dakota does spend a lot of time breaking the fourth wall. However, I found it well-done and amusing.
