This is a very literary novel, which I tend not to like. By literary I mean it takes a long time for stuff to happen and there are some literary affectations, such as none of the characters are named in the book. (They are all referred to by titles, such as "the gardener.") Also, it feels like the author set the book in New Orleans and flipped the geography north - south but didn't do any local feel.
Having said that, I did in fact finish the book and found it enjoyable if grim. Plotwise, it's somewhat of a mystery novel as we the reader attempt to figure out who the narrator is and what is going on in the world. So, although not entirely my cup of tea, I'm rating it four stars.
