So, fresh back from last weekend's science fiction convention and last night's writers workshop, some science fiction geekery. First, anybody who ever saw either version of the movie The Thing simply must go read (for free!) the new short story The Things.

June is shaping up to be potentially a busy month for me. June 12 is my 25th high school class reunion. June 18-20 (AKA, "the next weekend") is DucKon, a local SF convention. I've been asked to be on programming. Lastly, there is a new SF convention in town, Cyphan, June 25-27, (AKA "the weekend after that").

Now, Cyphan is an interesting con. First off, it appears to be a for-profit event. Either that or the volunteers are going to get a lot of money selling $300+ deluxe party and panel packages. Second, it's not at all clear who is running the event, always of concern with a new con. Anybody got any information?

ETA So, [livejournal.com profile] bdunbar fixed my cranial-rectal inversion (thanks, Brian!) and did a Whois on Cyphan. Apparently it's ran by one Michael Bollow, who also runs Reenactor Fest, a historical costume con, and is a member of 501st Legion, a Star Wars costume organization. Seems a nice-enough guy.

Now the question is will Cyphan be more of a costume-con or a general SF con? I guess I'll ask the man via Facebook.

You could probably drive out and say 'howdy'. Hey .. Wayne and Garth are from Aurora!

Appears to be 'Michael E Bollow' on Facebook, where he claims to be Owner / President of Phanatic Entertainment, LLC.

Why didn't I think of Whois?

whois lives on the command line.

I do a lot of my local stuff via command line - timesheet, todo list, connecting to this or that server, editing files.

When you got a hammer, every problem is a nail.
