So, I'm re-writing Space Rescue, Now New! With More Pirates! and I got to Chapter 17.
In the original, Chapter 17 (I now see) kinda sucked. It was slow and not much happened. Now, in Chapter 17 the bad guys discover that they've got USAF space-to-space missiles, and the good guys get a clue that something serious is afoot. Much more action.
Not in the book (yet), I've figured out who wanted the missiles. There is a group called the Manifest Destiny Movement, who in the to-be-written words of a character think that "the Solar System is God's gift to America." The Movement's presumed plan is to seize control of Mars, or more exactly Martian orbital space, and get the US to annex the planet.
The fact that the Indian and Chinese air forces might not take that sitting down is not of concern to the Movement. Nor of concern is the fact that a lot of folks might get killed in this takeover.
This also provides the villain and plot for the (vaguely plotted) sequel, working title The Night Watch. I've also come up with a much better ending for my lead pirates - one that recycles them for the next book. (They are Not Happy about being recycled. Good thing I'll never meet my characters in a dark alley.)
