The weather in Chicago has been frankly shitty this week. Rain, storms and humidity followed by rain, cold and wind. Right now were in the cold slot (44 degrees F or 7 degrees C) and, just for variety, it's raining. I had the heat on this morning! Weather like this makes me glad to have an inside job.

Having said that, I am a bit envious of Tobias Buckell. He just got back from a week on a sailing yacht, coming north from the Virgin Islands. Now, in fairness to Toby, he was a crew member, not a pampered passenger. Since this was a delivery cruise (moving the boat to summer cruising waters) there were no passengers. And for reasons known only to the boat's captain, they were standing 3 hours on / 6 hours off watches (bleech!).

But damn do the pictures look good!

There's also something to be said for being at sea in a working boat. You have watches and some duties to keep you busy, but there's still a lot of time to just look out the window. It looked like a fun trip.

Ah yes. Did some cruising down there as a teen, with my folks. The manager of the charter outfit told me to come back after I graduated, he'd give me a job.

He might have been gassing me - but this was after he'd seen me handle a boat, so maybe not.

Later I did go back - but only because the LST 'just happened' to pull into Saint Thomas for a three day liberty after OV 93.

I liked St. Thomas a lot more when I was 23. There was a PO off another ship with red hair and a look in her eye. Too bad I was married and broke at the time.
