I really do like my boss. Yesterday is a good example. He came back from vacation on Monday, and I told him then that I was abbreviating my vacation. On Tuesday, the boss said to me, "just take the whole vacation and we'll get somebody in to cover for you." Wow, thanks!

I was sorely tempted to take him up on that, but I decided that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. Having said that, with five viable candidates to fill my empty position, I think I'll have somebody in relatively soon. So, the last week of September and the first week of October look viable to go somewhere.

The plan was for Week 2 to be three National Parks - Lassen Volcanic and Redwoods in California and Crater Lake in Oregon. Looking at the collective park's websites, that time of year doesn't have appreciably worse weather than now. Also, from a strictly driving standpoint, it makes better sense to fly into and out of Sacramento.

Yeah, it's an additional flight, but Southwest has cheap specials and a rental car daily rate is a rental car daily rate. Ditto hotels and meals. So, the only additional cost is a flight, and if I can enjoy my vacation instead of worrying about what's going on back at work, the cost is worth it.

The end of September, first week of October is a great time to visit the West Coast. The weather is still good and the kids are back in school. Enjoy!
