Tobias Buckell, author of the very entertaining SF book Arctic Rising, points out that China recently sent its first ship from the Atlantic to the Pacific via the Arctic Ocean.

Per the article linked above, if the ice melt were to stop today, we'd be at the 3rd-lowest level of ice ever. There is, however, another two weeks of melting to come. Based on that, I think Buckell's Arctic Rising isn't so much fiction as fact that hasn't happened yet.

Yet I saw an article just a while ago talking about how commerce will benefit from the new open-sea routes through the (former) Arctic ice pack - and how exploring for oil is now possible!

Man, for black-comedy stupidity.that's as far gone as new Federal regulation to “help the economy,”

That suggests that there's no such thing as a government regulation that helps the economy. I'd argue quite strongly that Glass-Stegal did a lot more good than harm.

I also quite like food safety laws.
