The weather has turned cold in Chicago (I know, shocking for Chicago in December) so to keep warm let's throw some links on the fire.

A) Apparently Lee Harvey Oswald, in the process of trying to defect to Cuba, attended a party at the Cuban embassy in Mexico City. There he learned that JFK was trying to assassinate Castro. Perhaps that's why Oswald shot Kennedy.

B) Linkage is not endorsement - this guy says America has been using 'Breaking Bad' logic since 9/11. "Breaking Bad" logic is "because we're the Good Guys (tm) anything we do is okay."

C) From pilot James Fallows - landing at the wrong airport is easy to do.

D) A Wal-Mart in Ohio was criticized for holding a food drive for their own employees. I am ambivalent about this. On the one hand, I'd like Wal-Mart to pay their people a living wage. On the other, the local managers can only do so much or they will get fired by corporate.

E) Signal boost - Patrick Rothfuss is holding a charity fundraising drive.

ETA F) Nelson Mandela, much like George Washington, was no pacifist.

You have to admit, a food drive for your own employees does send a message to corporate headquarters!

The running brushfire war between Wal Mart and labor unions has worked to the benefit of the employees, as free business competition always does. In this case, while Wal Mart's wages may be sluggish in getting off the minimum, the benefits package is comprehensive: Health, dental, vision, all covered at 80% or better. Me, I don't live luxuriously, but by the standards of any earlier century I live large, and really, it's surprising how well this all works out: I have no complaints - not least because when I DO, they're listened to! Not much is heard these days of the old Sam Walton cult of personality, at least down at the local-store level, but 'respect for the individual' remains a core belief, and individual voices are heard.

A friend of mine said to me, “You like the job, and the job likes you (http://baron-waste.livejournal.com/2086794.html),” and yah, y' know, okay.

[By the bye, thanks for the link to that web site: It's interesting to see a collectivist analog to Fox News (to which they constantly refer, in envy and hatred: Obviously they're aware of the equivalence.) It's all relative: Crazy is Doppler blue-shifted as well as red-shifted. That 'blue-shifted' totalitarians so heavily outnumber 'red-shifted' isn't relevant to the point…]
