Like the label on the tin says:

1) For-profit colleges don't seem to work: Half – HALF! – of all loan defaults come from the 13% of students at for-profits. From the linked article, "When 20% of your students are graduating compared to 55% across all public universities and nearly two-thirds at privates, you're barely a university."

2) Two newish SF fans (each into SF for a decade or so) review Robert Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Not so much with the liking. (stolen from [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll).

3) John Scalzi waxes wise on Enjoying Problematic Things or, "enjoying works of art by people who aren't very good."

I've never actually liked The Moon is a Harsh Mistress myself, for many of the same reasons as cited and I'm assuming that I'm significantly older than the reviewers.

A lot of Heinlein's stuff doesn't actually age well, his shorts are generally better.

And let's not discuss 5th Column or whatever it got called in different imprints.

Sixth Column, based on Campbell's "All". "All" is worse.

I find the idea of 'worse' quite hard to wrap my head around frankly.

To quote Malvina Reynolds:

Chorus:
Do you think you've hit bottom?
Do you think you've hit bottom?
Oh, no.
There's a bottom below.

There's a low below the low you know.
You can't imagine how far you can go down.
