2014 Hugos, Voting For Edition

Novels

I give up - Larry Correia's Warbound is too much of a slog for me. Much like the Hugo-award-winning Windup Girl (which I despised) my problems with the book are historical and fictional. Fictional in that I don't give a damn about any of the characters (especially the whiny-ass industrialist Whats-His-Face) and historical in that FDR, a man who spent his entire political career pushing against segregation, is now going to segregate people with magical powers. I'm also not even going to attempt Wheel of Time.

Novelettes

Ted Chiang is a bit off his game this year. That story was good but not great. The Torgersen story was pretty good, and nice in that it created dramatic tension in a situation where the characters were not in any physical danger. I enjoyed the de Bodard story a lot as well. Vox Day's offering clearly doesn't belong in this list, except as the failure mode of clever.

So, novel, so far, that's my 1 and 2 spot, same as yours, not reading Wheel of Time and haven't been arsed to read the other two yet. I probably won't read Parasite as I've still got some annoyance with the author over her behaviour on line recently and I'm not sure I forgive her quite yet.

Novelette - the Day ain't making it on any list I vote for it's awful. I'm probably going with MRK over the Chiang, there was something off about the structure... it felt like he started in one direction and ended up somewhere else and didn't go back to fix the first section. Interesting idea, but not as well executed as some of his others.

I'm really struggling with the Novellas at the moment and the Shorts as I've not much liked anything I've read so far.
