I had a culture-filled weekend. Herewith, a report.

On Saturday, I attended a signing event for author Benjamin Milligan's book By Water Beneath The Walls. Ben is a former Navy SEAL and asked the question one day "How did the US Navy—the branch of the US military tasked with patrolling the oceans—ever manage to produce a unit of raiders trained to operate on land?" Not finding a simple answer, he decided to do some research. His very entertaining and informative book which I am currently reading was the answer. Highly recommended.

On Sunday, which was rainy, cold and windy, I went to see Dune, which was clearly advertised in the title sequence as "Part 1." It was very well-done and here are some non-spoilerly details.

1) The movie is 2 1/2 hours long and only covers about half of the book, which gives it plenty of time to breathe. Things did not feel rushed, although some may find the first half-hour a bit slow.
2) Jason Momoa and Zendaya were great, and IMHO stole every scene they were in. I especially enjoyed Zendaya's extended scenes at the end of the movie.
3) Liet-Kynes's role in the movie is greatly expanded from the earlier movie, which was nice.
4) In general, and despite the extended length, the movie seemed more on-point. There were fewer digressions than in the previous movie.

Overall, highly recommended.
