Comes news yesterday that Trump paused the punitive tariffs on Mexico and Canada in exchange for them promising to do what they had planned to do. MAGA is running around doing victory laps. This as stupid as cheering for somebody because they "won" a "professional wrestling" match.
If you've watched a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) match in the past decade or so, what you'll note is that there's very little actual wrestling going on. There's a lot of posturing, acting, yelling - but not much wrestling. When the wrestling actually starts, it's obviously fake - one wrestler will proport to pull another wrestler's hair but will wait until the other wrestler has grabbed their wrist, for example. Trump, famously, was involved in this entertainment for a while.
Thus unto the recent flap about tariffs. Trump spent months promising tariffs on "Day One" - tariffs which would supposedly reduce the US's trade deficit with Mexico and Canada. (In actuality, they would have plunged all three countries into recession.) Then he "imposed" them with a delayed effective date. As documented by others and collected by me here, he then "paused" them because Mexico and Canada agreed to do things which they were already doing. In short, artificial crisis artificially averted.
The people who participate in pro wrestling know it's fake - they use the term kayfabe to describe the portrayal of staged events as genuine. Two questions:
1) Does Trump know kayfabe from real?
2) Does MAGA know kayfabe from real?
