An interesting article found here. Money quote: "The pattern is clear once you know what to look for. MAGA appeals to people who need to feel special, who need enemies to blame, who need simple answers to complex problems. It attracts those who mistake confidence for competence, who confuse being loud with being right, who think that admitting uncertainty is weakness."

I found a summary of last year's election that was plausible.

Democrats: "The economy is going well. Elect us so we can do more of the same."

Republicans: "Your economic pain is real. Democrats and immigrants are to blame. Elect us so we can fix those problems."

So a lot of people voted for the party that pretended it would help them, rather than the party that said they did not need help because everything was fine. That seems plausible for the base of poor people supporting Republicans.

The reasons rich people support Republicans is because that party protects the interests of the rich.
