chris_gerribThe day before Thanksgiving, somebody shot two National Guard members who were "protecting" Washington DC. As of this writing, one of them is dead, the other remains in critical condition. The alleged shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal was part of a US-Army backed "Zero Unit" charged with hunting down and killing Taliban leaders.
He was, in short, both highly vetted and exactly the sort of immigrant we should have been bending over backwards to help. To the surprise of nobody, we weren't. We didn't give him a work permit or legal status. MAGA claims to "support the troops" but here's a troop we didn't support. The decision to pause processing of Afghan asylum claims is a textbook example of racism.
Trump's deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Washington DC was unnecessary and the troops had no mission, as evidenced by the fact that these two soldiers (one of which was in the Air National Guard) were standing around on a street corner. His latest plan, to send an additional 500 troops, is merely doubling down on stupid.
