I'm planning a vacation for late January / early February. (Experience has taught me that unless I plan a vacation, it doesn't happen.) So, Mexico or a cruise?

The last time I was in Mexico, I was in high school with a Spanish class. The last time I was on a cruise, the ship was gray and had no booze. I'm single, don't want to share a cabin or room, and have a passport.

Suggestions?

Depends what you're looking for in a vacation. If you want a vacation where everything is taken care of, and you can just relax and don't mind having an inflexible touring schedule than take the cruise. If you like more freedom to set your own pace and destinations, but are willing to do more planning than go to Mexico (I'm assuming you're not doing a resort). You could probably do it cheaper than a cruise too.

Personally I'd choose my own way over any packaged vacation, so I'd pick Mexico especially to see all the historical landmarks. But that's my taste.

I'm leaning towards a short "no hassle" vacation.

You're a Navy man. Take a cruise. Just take a better cruise than you did last time. On every cruise Carol and I have taken, the ship was swimming in booze. In 1998, cruising to a solar eclipse in the Caribbean, I had my first taste of Drambuie. And my last.

I get seasick, so we won't be doing a lot more of them, but they're fun--tho I don't know how much fun they'd be alone. (We always went in a group: Carol and I, my sister and Bill, a couple of my friends, and a couple of their friends.)

Mexico is actually not bad if you like water sports. We went to Cancun in 2000, and the XPuha park was spectacular.

We're going to Hawaii in February. Haven't been there in 11 years. (And we went nowhere for our 30th, sigh.) It's Time.

You do realize that my last cruise in the post above was on a US Navy ship? :-)

Having developed sea legs on a ship 1/20 the size of a typical cruise ship, seasickness *shouldn't* be a problem.

I'm still in the "plotting" phase.
