I'm going to Rotary, so have some links in lieu of content.

A) The other government revolving door - sheriffs departments and state troopers providing new homes for bad cops. Note: although this article is safe, the full site is full of not-safe-for-work "good shit."

B) Regarding the mess in Ferguson, this guy sums up my views perfectly.

C) An interesting article on the American way of dying. Having seen this with a number of aging relatives, the article makes good points.

D) The US Navy has deployed a 30 KW laser as a weapon.

E) An interesting article on the guy who refloated the Costa Concordia.

F) Space geeks really need to drop whatever they are doing and watch this movie.

My friend Bill, whom you met at the Worldcon, has real issues with the dying thing. When his mother was very sick a year or so ago he had to fight to the point of having a complaint made against him by one of the Doctors at his hospital over the treatment. As far as he was concerned the treatments they were proposing were more likely to kill her than do any good.

She had anemia, and the doctor wanted to an endoscopic investigation, which has a high risk of perforating the bowel in an older person and, as he asked, what the hell are you going to do if she does have cancer? There's little point in doing surgery or radiation on a frail 86 year old.

His partner and the surgeon she was pumping gas for once had a fight with a family about refusing to agree to a kidney transplant with a 92 year old with dementia...

In truth, my experiences have been fairly positive. My aged relatives had living wills, and those that had long-term illnesses went fairly peacefully.
